Schools and Hospitals are at high risk of containing Asbestos!
Despite the fact that Asbestos was banned in the UK over two decades ago, the lethal carcinogen still ranks high as the leading cause of occupational fatalities, linked to over 5000 deaths in the country in 2021.
An estimated six million tonnes of Asbestos, a potentially lethal carcinogen, are still present in millions of buildings across the UK, including schools, hospitals, factories and homes.
According to the Education and Skills Funding Agency (EFSA), up to 80% of both conventional and System-Built Schools in the UK may contain Asbestos. Approximately 700 English schools were cited for failing to demonstrate that they were managing their Asbestos in accordance with regulations. Additionally, there is rising worry regarding university structures, especially living halls for students. According to a Freedom of Information (FoI) request filed to 106 institutions in England by Stephenson Solicitors, about 74 percent of the buildings inspected had Asbestos. Consequently, while they sat in a classroom or went down a hallway, hundreds of thousands of teachers and pupils may have been exposed to the poisonous material.
Hospitals also have a lot of Asbestos as well. According to a BBC news report, 198 of the 211 NHS Trusts, that provided responses to the organization's enquiry stated that Asbestos was present in their facilities. This increases the risk of Asbestos related diseases in nurses to three times that of the general population.
